LAFITTE'S PIRATE RUM: The rum story starts in the Caribbean where explorer Christopher Columbus first introduced sugar cane plants in 1493. Sugar cane was then after refined into sugar, and through this process a happy accident occurred. That's when fermented molasses, the discarded byproduct of sugar cane, was converted into a sweet alcohol called rum.

Inexpensive to make and easy to transport, rum quickly became a "Bonafide" boom to the Caribbean economy. As a staple export around the world, barrels of rum were a mainstay on ships sailing the pirate-infested waters of the Caribbean. AMERICAN PIRATE: On September 2, 1814, Captain Nicholas Lockyer, commander of the British Warship, Sophia, arrived at Barataria to offer Jean Lafitte protection of his pirate kingdom, $30,000 in gold and the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy if he would lead the English forces through the swamps and assist in their attack on New Orleans. Lafitte said, "You shall have an answer in two weeks." As the Sophia sailed away Lafitte turned to Dominique You and said, "They assume I am a pirate from France who will do anything for a reward. They have no idea with whom they are dealing with, nor do they realize I am an American!"

This meant many of the ships attacked by pirates were laden with barrels of Rum, ripe for the taking. NO QUARTER: When Pirates hoisted the blood red flag it signified "No Quarter" given, meaning that no mercy would be shown, and no life would be spared.
