LTC MARQUE: Pirate /ˈpīrət/ ~ A person who attacks and raids ships at sea; a sea-plunderer, one who without authority and by violence seizes or interferes with a ship or property of another; one who makes use or reproduces the work of another without authorization. Jean Lafitte's preferred victim on the high seas was England's East India Company, who branded Lafitte, "The Bastard of Barataria." As retribution for the insult, the Pirate King pilfered their famous marque as his own, infuriating King George III.

PIRATE AF: In November of 1813 Governor William Claiborne issued a $500 Reward for the capture of the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte. Letters ablaze, these wanted posters appeared throughout the city of New Orleans.

But of course the "Pirate King" could not pass on the opportunity to humiliate his famed nemesis! New Orleans citizens were treated to a bit of humor, compliments of their favorite corsair. In the brisk dawn of a November morning, not long after the wanted posters were distributed, passersby noticed all of them gone and replaced by another. AMERICAN PIRATE: On September 2, 1814, Captain Nicholas Lockyer, commander of the British Warship, Sophia, arrived at Barataria to offer Jean Lafitte protection of his pirate kingdom, $30,000 in gold and the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy if he would lead the English forces through the swamps and assist in their attack on New Orleans. Lafitte said, "You shall have an answer in two weeks." As the Sophia sailed away Lafitte turned to his brother, Dominique You and said, "They assume I am a pirate from France who will do anything for a reward.
